The Wright family has a special way of announcing their return to the lineup. Oldest brother Owen bounced back from a head injury to capture a blistering victory at the 2017 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast. Sister Tyler snapped into form with a Finals appearance at the lululemon Maui Pro at the end of last season. And now, after 10 months out of the water due to a back injury, youngest brother Mikey just dropped a new edit to his triumphant return to form.
In 2018, Mikey suffered a brutal wipeout at Pipeline. The beating herniated his L4 and L5 vertebrae and led to spinal stenosis. Grinding through the pain, he competed in eight Championship Tour events that year, and in a testament to his talent, finished the season ranked 12th in the world.
He returned to the CT in 2019, but after three events withdrew from the rest of the season to focus on his recovery.
"For where I'm at right now, yeah, I'm feeling pretty good," says Mikey in a statement-making new edit from his sponsor Quiksilver.
"I'm going pretty hard in the surf, going back to doing some airs and that," he continues. "Obviously, I'm sore, like muscle sore. Like, I haven't been doing all this shit for like 10 months now. Feeling good. Feeling confident. Happy to be going big again."
The new video was shot on in the early part of 2020 and features footage from Australia, Fiji, Hawaii and Texas. It's classic Mikey -- chasing swells and going huge.
